So its 30 years since the Sunbeam Lotus was first launched at the Geneva Motorshow. So the Avenger and Sunbeam Owners' Club arranged several simultaneous meetings across Europe to celebrate. There were gatherings at Mal Stuart's premises, Chris Birkbeck's rallyschool, O'Kane Cars in Northern Ireland, Holland and Skip Brown Cars in Cheshire.
Despite about 2 weeks of really good weather, on the meet at Skip's on 25 April started dull and then the rain poured down before we were due to set off. As we left, the rain stopped, but, inevitably the car got dirty from the puddles on the way. Ho-hum.
Now, given that the ASOC annual national meeting usually attracts between 4 and 10 Sunbeam Lotuses, the meeting at Skip's was a great success. No fewer the 9 Sunbeam Lotuses, 3 1600 Sunbeams, an Avenger and a Samba made the meet. For an hour and a half the we chatted, ate sarnies and took pictures. It helps when many of us haven't seen each other for a good few months so there's plenty to talk about. There were a handful of non-members there too - some who had picked up on the event from the club's website, some who did a double-take as they were passing and came back for a chat and / or to take pictures. There are a few camera phones full of unexpected pictures as a result of today.
At 13:30 a convoy of 12 cars headed off to Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire to commemorate the first meeting of the ASOC over 20 years ago. Here are some more piccies:
