May in Cholmondley - May 2008

So the 'beam came out blinking. Why? Well I'd volunteered to run the Avenger and Sunbeam Onwers' Club stand at the "Day of 1000 Classic Cars and Bikes" show at Cholmondley Castle on the Cheshire / Shropshire border. We had a capacity entry of 10 cars on our stand so we had a good day lined up - one of the first for the 2008 show season.

There had been some investment too. Knowing the weather so well, I'd picked up one of those easy-up style gazebo for forty quid from Halfords - I thought it would be great to keep the rain off those hardy members who turn up to support the club stand. On the club forum I made a joke about buying it for us all to shelter from the burning sun.

We had a great turn-out, but you need to get there on time, one member arriving 25 mins before the organisers were due to stop access to the field, but he still didn't make it to the stand 'cos of the organiser created traffic jams within the venue. Genius. We had a great selection of cars - a couple of competition prepped Sunbeams, a Tiger, a couple of Sunbeam Lotuses (including mine - the other one being the only one ever built by the factory in dark green - it had a role as an undercover traffic car for Greater Manchester police), and a few other cars too. We were parked up opposite a row of American muscle cars who all arrived together - quite a sight and sound and the ground was shaking too. Nice. The gazebo was absolutely necessary - we had glorious sunshine all day and temps peaked at 28 degrees c. Marvellous. I must make forum jokes more often!

My 4 year old boy was really pleased when we won runner-up in the post 1980s class. Why so pleased? Well we beat 2 Ferraris which meant he was over the moon!
